SPHERE SUMMER PROGRAM
For the past two summers, I have worked as a counselor at the Watkinson SPHERE summer program. This program is a 5-week long summer education camp that incorporates Watkinson students, Connecticut teachers and kids from inner-city Hartford. I have been working with the kids entering the third grade for two years now and it has completely changed my outlook on life and education.
SPHERE Summer Program: About
In Hartford, kids are often entered in raffle systems to try to get into a good magnet elementary schools in Hartford. The kids who participate in the program come from these types of schools and often have learning disabilities, or they attend the camp to enrich their skills before moving into the next school year (ranging from entering first to fifth grade). By working with kids who haven't had the same educational opportunities as I've had, I have learned that education is often taken for granted and that we need to work our hardest to acknowledge and retain the teaching that we do get.
This experience also taught me a lot about life. Kids at this camp often have difficult home lives, which has, again, made me grateful for what I have.
