At Watkinson, Global Studies requires that you attend nine of the offered Global Studies events over the course of the school year. Some of the events we attend are required.
"A PATH APPEARS" REFLECTION
"A Path Appears" by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn was the Global Studies summer reading book.
FRESHLY SQUEEZED EVENT REFLECTION
This required event starred Colin Mcenroe and two other speakers. They discussed politics, people's views on it and social stigmas in the USA.
BILAL SEKOU CLASS REFLECTION
Bilal Sekou came to Global Studies class to talk about his childhood, his career and how the two impacted each other.
CAMBODIAN LIVING ARTS EVENT REFLECTION
Over the course of the week, we studied the Cambodian Genocide, Cambodian music and Arn Chron Pond's journey in restoring music and hope in Cambodia. All of our work during class lead up to a master class with Arn and other musicians, as well as a performance at night.
OBSERVING A RELIGIOUS CEREMONY
For this event study, students were to go and view/participate in a religious ceremony. They could choose one of the three offered in Global Studies class, or they could go to one on their own. I went to catholic church with my friend and her family.
NEW YORK CITY DAY TRIP
Global Studies and the Watkinson Creative Arts Program (CAP) took a day trip to New York City. While there, Global Studies visited the United Nations building, took a tour of the Tenement Museum, ate a traditional chinese lunch, and saw the show "The Band's Visit" at night.
RICH BROWN CLASS SEMINAR
Rich Brown from "Where There Be Dragons" came into our Global Studies class and talked to us about his work across the globe, Guatemalan history and the current Guatemalan Migration crisis.
SKYPE WITH TAREK ZAKANDA
During Global Studies class, we skyped with Tarek Zakanda, who was forced out of his home in Syria because of the war going on in the country. Students had the opportunity to ask questions about what he had been through, how he continued his studies (he was attending school), and how his love for music changed and helped him through the process.
TRIP TO THE PALESTINE MUSEUM
While visiting the Palestine Museum in Woodbridge, Connecticut, we learned a lot about what exactly has been going on in Palestine (Middle Eastern countries have been taking extreme precaution to limit how much outsiders know). We also had the opportunity to look at different forms of Palestinian art, including books, paintings and sculptures.
GLOBAL CHANGEMAKERS TALK
At this event at Saint Joseph's College, three distinguished and accomplished women discussed the efforts they have made to shape themselves and the world.
WATKINSON SOCIAL JUSTICE DAYS
Every year, Watkinson School students participate in a day of learning about the world around them and attend different workshops focusing on different aspects of the subject.
SYRIAN COOKING CLASS
Our global studies group attended an after-school cooking class at Watkinson and learned how to make hummus and tabouli.
GLOBAL STUDIES CAPSTONE EVENING
At the end of every school year, the seniors of Global Studies present their year's work of research through a verbal presentation and a topic table.
"THE SPIRIT CATCHES YOU AND YOU FALL DOWN" REFLECTIONS
For our 2019/2020 summer reading, Global Studies read "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down" by Anne Fadiman. This book surrounds the themes of western healthcare and the barriers it has while following the true story of Lia Lee.
DORJE DOLMA'S VISIT
Dorje was born in Nepal and traveled across the globe for medical help as a young girl. As an adult, she is an artist and wrote the book "Yak Girl" about her experiences as a child and into adulthood.
TRIP TO A DONG MARKET
A Dong Market is an Asian grocery store in Hartford Connecticut. Our class explored the market and discussed cultural differences between this visit and a typical trip to an American market.
RELIGIOUS SERVICE REFLECTION
For my religious service event this year, I attended a service at the Universal Unitarian Church in West Hartford, Connecticut.
"JUST MERCY" MOVIE REFLECTION
Starring Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Fox, "Just Mercy" is about a man who has been wrongly convicted and put on death row and tells the story of a lawyer who is trying to free him.
TRAVEL AND EMPATHY REFLECTION
This write-up reflects on the overall theme of travel and empathy in global studies
SKYPE WITH KINDA
Our class skyped with Kinda, a woman who had to leave her home in Syria due to the Syrian Crisis. Her and her family moved to Jordan, where she teaches arabic.
