SEWING
Outstanding Quality
Sewing is my favorite thing to do in my free time. I love sewing because it allows me to express myself in a fun way and in a fun atmosphere. I have been sewing for almost three years at Hartford Stitch. I attend classes there on Monday and Wednesday nights with other kids my age. My sewing teacher, Laura, is one of my greatest role models and mentors. Over the summer, I started doing work for Laura to help her prep for classes or camp sessions. I would cut fabric, copy patterns and do other work in the studio. I love working with her! Besides sewing in class, I also have a sewing machine at home and I sew a lot on the weekends.  I will also be working at a sewing fashion camp this summer as a counselor.
WHAT I MAKE
I have made so many different things over the years. The projects featured are some of my favorites. I mainly sew things that can be used, such as bags and pillows. I have made garments before, but I prefer to make other types of things. Scroll over the images for a description of what the project is. Click on it to see the entire image.
SEWING AND GLOBAL STUDIES
Last year, I started participating in the Million Pillowcase Challenge. I make pillowcases on my own time using one of the patterns on the challenge website. Once I have made, ironed and washed around five pillowcases, I can bring them into a participating sewing store. The pillowcases eventually go to hospitals or foster children. By participating in this challenge, I have made a connection with a small part of the world, and I hope to one day expand and sew for other needing organizations.
In the fall of 2019, I also joined the Sew Buddy program at the Elmwood community center, where a senior citizen and young sewist work together to make bags for women transitioning out of homelessness.
