BILAL SEKOU CLASS REFLECTION

October 15, 2018

Bilal Sekou came to Global Studies class to talk about his childhood, his career and how the two impacted each other.

Bilal Sekou Class Reflection: Past Events

Through Bilal Sekou’s talk, I learned a lot about how much your childhood can impact your future.  Sekou grew up very poor in a poor neighborhood, and even though his parents never finished their education, they believed that their children should.  His parents and family talked to him a lot about politics, and it impacted his future career choice in political science. He also learned about how his parents lived as children and how different their experiences were from his, and he encouraged the class to change the world instead of fix it.  This connects to the work we did with Kiva and A Path Appears because these programs allow you to choose one or more programs to contribute too and include the idea that every small effort makes a different and that by changing the world, maybe we can fix it too.  This visitor encouraged me to look at my own childhood and remember it so that I can help better my future.
